What is Polygraph?

Often polygraph is referred to as a “lie detector”, the polygraph instrument is designed by doctors and scientists which measures and records the body’s reactions while a person answers a series of questions.
However, this instrument does not “detect lies”, this is done by the polygraph examiner through the analysis of the data collected during from the examinee’s body during the testing process.
The polygraph test, is administered by a qualified and certified examiner, consists of the following steps:
- Pretest
The examiner explains in detail the purpose of the examination. The examinee’s written consent is obtained, examinee particulars are obtained, their background information is recorded. The entire process is explained, as well as the instrument, and all questions that are to be asked of the examinee are reviewed.
- In Test
The instrument is attached to the examinee. The reviewed questions are asked in series in order for the examiner to collect data from the examinee’s body. The data collected is for the purpose of detection of deception.
- Post test
Once collection of the data is complete the analysis of the data is carried out to determine the outcome. Following analysis, a further discussion with the examinee, this allows the examinee the opportunity to explain any unusual patterns or behaviors observed by the examiner. This additionally allows for any further information to be shared by the examinee.
Each polygraph test that is conducted will follow a set process, though each will be tailored based on the needs of the investigation. The set process has been developed through many years of study to set polygraph examiners on a path to best determine the honesty of any given examinee.
The success of a polygraph test depends heavily on the skill of the trained examiner, the environment in which the test is conducted and the co-operation of the examinee.
